Dear IceWhale Community Members,

From CasaOS to ZimaOS, the App Store has been part of our journey for a long time. Over the years, we have received a great deal of valuable feedback from the community and continued exploring how we could systematically improve the overall experience of discovering, installing, and managing apps.

With ZimaOS v1.7.0, we have completely reworked the app discovery and management experience, along with the overall interface design.

The all-new App Store 2.0 is more than just a list of apps. We have redesigned the app discovery, management, and detail pages, making it easier to find apps, check their status, and perform everyday management tasks. We have also added native YAML support, giving advanced users a more flexible and powerful way to configure their apps.

This upgrade would not have been possible without our community. Special thanks to @dragonfire1119 and @cp0204 for the time and effort they have dedicated to upgrading and maintaining their third-party app stores, and for their invaluable support of the ZimaOS app ecosystem.

Hey @777-Spider,

Thank you for the hard work on ZimaOS! I just installed the v1.7.0 update on my ZimaBoard 2 1664 powered NAS, and I noticed a new setting called “Web UI Rendering Mode.” Looking through the changelog I do not see anything about it. Will you explain what that setting changes, and what the two options, “Standard” and “Performance,” do to the experience?

I hate the new app management design with passion! I understand you wanted to build something new and original but it must also be funcitonal. I have huge 42 inch 4K monitor and I see 2 times less now than in ZimaOS 1.6.2

There is so much space wasted. The design is not functional. It is extremely annoying to have to keep scrolling down. Imagine you have to do many edits and have many services under the same stack… it takes 5 times longer time to manager. PLEASE FIX IT. It needs to be much more compact with much smaller padding so it can fit much more information on the screen. Also this BOX you have set is not resizable. I strongly belive it must take the entire height of the screen to accommodate for all the fields.

Also, please remove this button, and keep it expanded by default!!! This is very useful information that is hidden and needs to be visible.

I am just a very passionate user who happened to be a graphic designer so please take my input into consideration! At the moment I am running your Zima OS (Which I LOVE by the way) and just installed and tried Fygo OS which shapes to be your biggest competitor. I am trying both and Zima OS is way easier and app oriented for home users, so GREA JOB!

I created a small app on my home server to convert ZimaOS docker compose to FygoOS (not publised anywhere) just for myself, so in my opinion this design is much easier to manage entire stacks from the UI

I hope I am not breaking any rules here, just giving me 100% user experiance input. Please consider it.

I think it should be expanded by default, on both UI and YAML, but only vertically. And if anyone needs more real estate then the button should expand to full screen.

And one last suggestion, consider using mini icons for each section, as I’ve done in my FPK converter as it make the design much more easy on the eyes, visually pleasing and legible. Much simple to navigate.. Most humans are visual learners, it will be greatly appreciated!

I just ran the update and my Plex server will not open when clicking on the Plex icon in ZimaOS. It still shows as running with an app.plex.tv webapp login, but I can’t use a direct IP adress webapp login manually or by clicking on the icon in ZimaOS.

I have a self configured through the ZimaOS Channels DVR container running that ddoes being me to that service by clicking on it’s Zima OS icon.

I also have Dockhand installed from the ZimaOS store and Dockhand opens normally too.

Dockhand was used to install a new transcoding benchmark and wasn’t used in any way for the previous Plex Server install.

Great work! For consistency sake, please make sure the app store, settings, backup, and peerdrop apps all get dark mode. My retinas are permanently burned :slight_smile:

I installed 1.7 yesterday and for some reason my memory usage (32gig) keeps spiking and hogging at 90%. A simple copy / paste (files) from an external HDD folder to the NAS takes unusual long (more then 8 hours for a few gigabytes). Dockers are @ 4-6% memory usage on idle use.

Feedback for ZimaOS 1.7.0

First of all, I really like the direction ZimaOS is taking. The new App Store looks much cleaner and more modern than before, and I appreciate how quickly the team responds to user feedback and bug reports.

:+1: What I like

  • The new App Store design is a clear improvement over the previous version.

  • The categories make browsing much easier.

  • The overall layout looks cleaner and more modern.

  • Native YAML support is a great addition for advanced users.

:lady_beetle: Bugs

1. Moving folders leaves empty source folders

When moving folders between drives:

  • Files are moved successfully.

  • The original source folder remains as an empty folder.

  • This happens when the folder contains subfolders.

  • This behavior started with ZimaOS 1.6.2 and is still present.

2. Some apps require a manual restart after updating

After updating to ZimaOS 1.7.0:

  • Several apps did not work immediately.

  • I had to manually restart many containers.

  • Four applications still did not work correctly.

3. Reverse proxy URL issue

I use a reverse proxy.

The application settings always append the internal port to the URL, even though the reverse proxy already handles the routing.

Example:

Expected:

https://mydomain.example

Current:

https://mydomain.example:8601

The port should be optional or removable.

Context menus

The context menu font appears:

  • too bold

  • less sharp than before

  • visually heavier

The previous appearance looked cleaner and easier to read.

Storage page

The large blue “Customize your bays” button immediately draws all the attention.

I think the storage information should be the primary focus, while this action should be less visually dominant.

A smaller secondary button or a settings option would create a cleaner layout.

Docker application editor

The new Docker configuration interface looks modern.

However:

Many options are hidden behind Advanced.

For users who regularly edit Docker applications, this means an unnecessary extra click every time.

It would be better if:

  • ZimaOS remembered the user’s preference.

  • or allowed Advanced mode to stay permanently enabled.

:convenience_store: App Store

I really like the new App Store.

However, I think two useful features from the previous version should return.

Recently added apps

There should be:

  • a New badge

  • or a Recently Added section

This makes it much easier to discover newly added applications.

Number of apps

The previous App Store displayed how many apps each category contained.

I found this very useful and would like to see it return.

Update notification

The new update workflow feels less intuitive.

Previously:

Settings → Update → update immediately.

Now:

Settings → notification → App Store → Updates.

I think it would be better if:

  • clicking the update notification opened the App Store Updates page directly,

or even better,

  • the App Store itself displayed a notification badge (1, 2, 3…) whenever updates are available.

That would remove an unnecessary step.

:light_bulb: General feedback

In my opinion, the previous App Store was never the main issue.

The bigger challenge is the app ecosystem itself.

Sometimes apps install perfectly.

Sometimes they require manual work.

Sometimes updates arrive much later than expected.

I believe improving:

  • application reliability

  • compatibility

  • update frequency

would have a greater impact than adding more interface changes.

:star: Feature Request

On AMD systems, CPU temperature is displayed correctly again, which is great.

However, CPU power consumption (Watts) is still missing.

Displaying:

  • CPU Temperature

  • CPU Package Power (W)

would provide a much more complete system overview.

Internet links disappeared after the update

I encountered another issue after updating to ZimaOS 1.7.0.

All of my Internet Links (Web Links) disappeared again after the update.

This has happened before in an earlier beta version, and unfortunately it has occurred again after updating.

The applications and containers are still present, but the Internet Links are missing from the dashboard.

It seems that the Web Links are not being preserved correctly during the update process.

Hi, sorry if it has been mentioned somewhere else, but what is the sequence of commands to upgrade a ZimaBoard2. I understand I need to download the raucb file but not sure which directory to place it in or the commands to run to do the upgrade. Does this allow for uninstalling the upgrade if you choose you want to say with the previous version?

Just out of curiosity: are you planning to install the new version and keep it, or are you mainly interested in being able to roll back to the previous version if you don’t like the update?

I want to upgrade to the new version and keep. I was just thinking that in case the upgrade failed, i would not be left with a unusable system.

This is how I usually do the update:

  1. Download the .raucb file.

  2. Save it to the ZimaHD partition.

  3. Connect to the ZimaBoard via SSH and log in as root.

  4. Go to the cd /DATA directory.

  5. Run:

rauc install <filename>.raucb
  1. Wait for the installation to complete, then reboot the system.

I’ve updated my system this way several times without any issues.

Thanks for your feedback. Could you please manually run the following command in the command line?

docker start plex

After running it, please send us a screenshot of the error message.

Also, please click Logs on the Dashboard and send us a screenshot of the log page as well.

Also, if possible, please share a few details about the external drive and the file copy operation. This information will help us determine whether the issue may be related to the drive connection method or the number of files involved:

  • Is the external drive connected via USB or SATA?
  • Is the drive an HDD or SSD?
  • Approximately how many files were copied?

Yes, exactly.

If you’re installing the update manually via SSH, the .raucb file can be stored anywhere on the DATA partition. I usually save it directly in /DATA.

Then simply run:

rauc install zimaos-x86_64-1.7.0.raucb

    To help us investigate this further, could you please run the following script when convenient and send the result to dina@icewhale.org?

docker_restart_policy_report.sh (7.8 KB)

You can run the script with the following steps:

  • Place the script on your ZimaOS device.
  • Run: chmod +x docker_restart_policy_report.sh
  • Run the script: ./docker_restart_policy_report.sh

If possible, please also share the following information:

  • Which apps require a manual restart after updating?
  • Which apps are currently not working properly?
  • For the apps that are not working properly, can they be started successfully if you manually run docker start from the command line?

Unfortunately, I have already rolled back to ZimaOS 1.6.2 because I use my NAS every day, and 1.7.0 was not stable enough for my setup.

At the moment, I don’t want to upgrade to 1.7.0 again just to collect the diagnostic information.

If I test a future beta or release candidate again and the issue is still present, I’ll be happy to run the script and send you the results.

It removed all my custom grub config. I used m.2 NVME adapter because my motherboard doesn’t support NVME and when the update is finished it won’t boot :slight_smile:
