ZimaBlade + ZimaOS 1.7 — Disks Won’t Spin Down

I received my full ZimaBlade 7700 kit a few days ago and installed ZimaOS 1.7.

I’m using two 6TB Seagate Enterprise v4 drives in RAID 1 from my previous setup.

I noticed that the drives never spin down. They run at full speed constantly and get extremely hot (around 55°C).

To investigate further, I unplugged both drives and connected a single 1.5TB WD Green as a standalone disk. The same issue occurred; it also keeps spinning continuously.

I ran another test by connecting one of the 6TB Seagate Enterprise v4 drives to my Windows PC using a USB adapter. In that setup, the drive spun down normally after a few minutes.

Based on these tests, it seems like something is wrong on the ZimaOS or ZimaBlade side. I also tried reinstalling ZimaOS, but the issue persists.

Enterprise / NAS hard drives are actually designed to spin 24/7, so my guess is that the behavior is intentional. Stopping and starting the drives causes far more wear than keeping them spinning. The 55°C temperature should not cause any issues for the drives, but if you want them to run cooler you can get a small fan to move air across them.

Edit: Not a huge fan of XDA Developers, but after a quick search I was able to find this article: I learned the hard way to never spin down your NAS hard drives

But as someone who works in the IT industry I can tell you your drives will last far longer if you keep them spinning.
