Upgrade ZimaOS drive to larger capacity

Hi all,

I I’m running zimaOS on a 2012 Mac mini, I installed an old 32GB SSD into it to test, however I’d like to upgrade the internal drive to a larger one now that my apps and VMs are setup!

What is the best way to clone the OS without losing any data or file paths.

For this situation I would avoid reinstalling if your apps and VM paths are already working.

The safest method is a full disk clone of the existing 32GB SSD to the larger SSD, not just copying files. That should preserve the ZimaOS system, Docker data, app paths, mounts, and VM paths exactly as they are now.

Before doing anything, make a backup of any important app data and VMs first.

The general approach would be:

  1. Shut down ZimaOS cleanly.
  2. Remove the 32GB SSD.
  3. Clone the whole disk to the larger SSD using a cloning tool such as Clonezilla, Rescuezilla, or another full-disk imaging tool.
  4. Install the larger SSD and boot from it.
  5. Confirm ZimaOS boots and your apps/VMs still work.
  6. Only after confirming everything works, expand the data partition to use the extra space.

The important part is to clone the entire drive, including all partitions, not just the visible data folder.

I would not wipe the old 32GB SSD straight away. Keep it untouched until the new drive has booted and everything has been verified. That way you still have a working fallback if anything goes wrong.
