Esteban

Dear colleagues,

I apologize for the problems I’m describing. I hope I can finally get ZimaOS ready so I can enjoy it. I want to add two more hard drives to my existing four. When I try to format the drive, I see that the APPLICATION DATA, DOCKER, GALLERY, DOWNLOADS, and DOCUMENTS are already on one of the drives.

But of course, they’re on one of the drives that needs formatting. I’ve tried using a USB drive to see if I can migrate them and then add them back after formatting all six drives, but I can’t figure out how to migrate them there, even though the USB drive is recognized.

I admit I’m a bit lost. I don’t know if anyone else has encountered this and could share how they resolved it.

Thanks in advance.

Esteban

I believe the issue you’re facing is more a current limitation of ZimaOS than a mistake on your side, so don’t worry, you’re not doing anything wrong.

Right now, ZimaOS tightly links App Data, Docker, Gallery, Downloads, and Documents to the active storage pool. Because of this, those system folders cannot be migrated to a USB drive, even if the USB device is detected correctly. USB storage is treated as external data only and is not supported as a temporary location for system or application data.

That’s why you’re blocked when trying to format the existing disks, the system data lives on one of the drives that is part of the pool.

What I suggest, and what I believe is the safest and supported approach, is the following:

First, back up your personal data (Documents, Downloads, Gallery, etc.) to a USB drive or another computer or NAS.

Next, remove or uninstall your apps from ZimaOS. This safely clears Docker and App Data from the storage pool.

Then, recreate the storage pool using all six disks in one step, so the system can build it cleanly.

Finally, reinstall your apps and restore your personal data from the backup.

I know this isn’t the smooth experience anyone hopes for, but I believe this is currently the only reliable workflow in ZimaOS when expanding a pool.

The main takeaway is:

  • Existing pools cannot be expanded in place
  • USB drives cannot be used to temporarily host system or app data
  • Any change to the pool requires a backup, rebuild, and restore process

If you’d like, please share your ZimaOS version and how your current four disks are configured. I think that will help us guide you through this with the least amount of risk.

Esteban

Dear colleagues,

Issue resolved. I followed the backup configuration that ZimaOS provided for the folders, ignoring the USB drive, which, although recognized, wasn’t integrated as part of the system. After doing this, I stopped getting the message that the disks were empty.
Once I did this, I was able to format all six disks.

The next challenge is formatting them in “ZFS,” since I’m installing documents and movies, and ZFS seems to be the most stable system. I’ve used it in the past and had no problems. I’m following the instructions at ZFS en ZimaCube | Zimaspace Docs. However, I’m stuck at the following step:

Create ZFS in the created storage pool:

zfs create pool1/zfs

Use the following command to display zfs list

I don’t know why it won’t let me, even though the disks are in one drive and completely formatted. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this and could share their thoughts. Thanks to everyone, and Happy New Year! 2026
