Hey everyone!
You know that moment when you just want to try a new app on your home server… and end up watching a Docker image download crawl along instead? Or a mirror that worked yesterday suddenly stops responding?
Wanted to share an open-source project that tackles exactly this: oci-mirror-proxy.
The idea is pretty simple: instead of relying on a single image mirror, you run a small local proxy that manages several mirrors for Docker.
A few things that make it useful:
- A mirror goes down? It temporarily takes that mirror out of rotation and checks when it comes back.
- A layer download gets interrupted? It can continue from the same point using another mirror, rather than starting over.
- Want to try another mirror? You can add or disable mirrors without restarting Docker.
- Want the quickest response? Optional request racing lets mirrors compete to respond first.
It’s a pull-only proxy, not another registry to maintain, and it doesn’t keep a local image cache. There’s also a Docker Compose deployment option in the repo.
The part where this community could really help
A mirror that’s great in one region might be painfully slow—or completely unreachable—in another.
The project supports regional mirror subscriptions, so users can import a shared catalog filtered for their region rather than hunt down endpoints themselves. The catalog already includes ZimaOS mirror endpoints alongside other providers.
Know a reliable public image mirror that works well where you live? Please help add it to the catalog! You don’t have to write code:
- Open an issue with the mirror URL, your region, the provider’s documentation, and any access restrictions.
- Or submit a PR to
subscriptions/mirrors.json.
Reports of broken mirrors are useful too. Please share only public endpoints—no private tokens or credentials.
If this sounds useful for your setup, give the project a star on GitHub
Contributions, feedback, and regional mirror suggestions are all welcome.
What region are you in, and which image mirrors have actually been reliable for you?
