Reverse proxy access via Tailscale domain works great on iOS — is it (or will it be) supported on ZimaClient for macOS?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to share my experience and ask a question about the macOS client.

On ZimaClient for iOS I connect to my ZimaOS device through a reverse proxy using a domain that is reachable only while Tailscale is active on the device (e.g. blablabla.funnyname.ts.net) with a custom port. It works very well — actually much better than the previous method with Network ID. For me this has been a real breakthrough. I’m attaching a screenshot showing the domain-based connection screen in the iOS client.

Now I’d like to do the same from ZimaClient for macOS. However, in the macOS client I don’t seem to find that option: I only see either Network ID or auto-discovery when on the same LAN. I can’t find a field to enter a domain name + custom port like on iOS.

I noticed that the Zima 2.3.2 beta (announced in the Facebook post of September 18 — “Zima Client Remote Access Beta — We Need U!”) and the corresponding GitHub release page:

mention support for “LAN, Remote ID, direct IP (Tailscale / ZeroTier)” and availability on iOS, Android, Windows & macOS. The release notes also say the client can connect through “Tailscale / ZeroTier IPs”. I’m also attaching a screenshot of that Facebook post with the relevant part highlighted.

My questions:

  1. Has this domain-based connection (a domain reachable only while Tailscale is active, plus a custom port) — which has been a real breakthrough on iOS — been introduced on ZimaClient for macOS as well?

  2. If it’s already there, where do I find that option in the macOS client? I only see Network ID and LAN auto-discovery.

  3. If it’s not there yet, will it be introduced in a future macOS release?

Tailscale is active on my Mac as well, so network reachability is not the issue — it’s just about the client UI/feature on macOS.

Thanks!

Please use the latest version 2.3.5, and you’ll be able to use this feature!

Thank you for your reply. However, the Mac version still seems to be launching the download of version 2.3.2…

Everything is fine on my end.

Plese email vicky@icewhale.org to get pkg.

Could the issue be that my MacBook Pro (2019), running macOS Tahoe, has an Intel processor rather than an Apple Silicon (ARM64) chip? Is there any way to get version 2.3.5 of the client running on my Mac?

I was finally able to download version 2.3.5, but unfortunately macOS reports that it is not compatible with my MacBook Pro (2019), as it has an Intel processor rather than Apple Silicon (ARM64).

Could you confirm whether version 2.3.5 is currently available only for Apple Silicon Macs? If so, are you planning to release an Intel-compatible version as well?

It would be a shame if the latest version and its new features were only available to Apple Silicon users, excluding the still considerable number of Mac users running Intel-based machines.

I’d really like to use the custom domain/reverse proxy connection on my Mac, just as I currently do successfully with Zima Client on my iPhone.

Thanks for considering this!

It looks like it, we can build a separate version next week.

That’s great news! Thanks a lot for considering this. I think an Intel-compatible version will be very useful for many Mac users who are still running Intel-based machines. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Much appreciated!
