I just installed ZimaOs 1.5 on a CCWQ mini nas device. Since this device is designed to allow four NVME drive, i decided to run zimaos from an external usb drive and keep all (4) NVMEs for data.
So far so good everything is running smoothly but before committing to this setup i would like to know :
1- Is this a supported setup, maybe not the best idea…
2- Will this gives me problems down the lines when os updates will have to be applied (no enought temp space…).
So this lead me to one last question:
What is the minimal recommended size for the ZimaOS Drive ?
I was nearly in the same scenario. Booting ZimaOS from USB works good, but it is not bug-free. I had to use USB because of a little HW-limitation, but found a nice workaround and switched to booting from internal drive. Even if it ran very ok-ish, every system is different.
I upgraded from 1.4 to 1.5 without a problem.
Because of the usb bottleneck I recommend to not use USB as the OS drive.
Thanks, i will have to redo my Config. Booting from usb is common for NAS os’s. The machine i use only have four nvme slots and it’s a shame to lost one nvme for os.
Well, there is a big difference between booting from USB and actually running the OS from USB. Unraid is the only NAS OS - i am aware of - that is built to boot from USB, but is running from RAM.
Which other NAS OS‘ running from USB are you reffering to?
Yeah, I have two NVMe slots and was suprised by the feeling of a „downside“ in that… BUT, after switching to internal drive i must say, it is not a „sacrifice“ and i have zero regrets.
I completely understand your point and I agree that it would be awesome if we wouldn’t lose an NVMe slot to the boot drive like unRAID/Terramaster, however, we must agree that those are the exceptions and not the norm. Perhaps that’s something that will happen in the future if the feature suggestion gets routed internally and accepted by IceWhale’s team.
cc @Zima-Giorgio to relay the proposal internally and assess its feasibility
I admit i did something weird. I’ll plan to build a second ZimaOS server using a proper SATA SSD drive for ZimaOS. It also means that i have to move the content i run on the primary (proof of concept) device to a new one. I’ll have about 20-30 containers to move and i did it manually thru ssh backup / restore for each containers.
That would be nice if it can be done thru ZimaOS gui. (Another long shot)
I also think this feature has more value and potential than ZimaOS running from USB.
