Raid 1 - Adding Drive

I have a RAID 1 configuration that I would like to add a drive to. Can I do this without wiping the data on the current RAID 1 pool I have? While there is nothing on the pool currently that is irreplaceable I would prefer not to lose the media I have on there. I know they recently added the ability to add to a RAID 5 pool but curious if anyone tried adding to a RAID 1 pool successfully.

This operation is currently not possible
RAID1 is a mutual backup mechanism. If you want to add a disk, do you want to add a backup? @SRentz89

My real world case is as my media collection grows my current raid pool it is in will be too small and I want to add additional capacity to it. I am new to the NAS world so maybe there is just a way to add the 2nd pool to the Plex container to see but when I have tried adding an additional media location to the container settings it did not seem to like that.

@SRentz89 I believe what you want is the ability to add drives (or replace small drives with larger drives) to your existing pool as your storage needs grow. This is generally called raid expansion.

This feature is available, but very new, in ZFS. More information is available at https://openzfs.org/w/images/6/68/RAIDZ_Expansion_v2.pdf . The feature is available, yet not widely tested in the latest release of OpenZFS. It will be added to the Oct 2024 release of TrueNAS.

It is also available in Synology. There is more information at Replace a Drive | DSM - Synology Knowledge Center . I have been using the feature successfully for over 8 years.

If you are really looking to try something experimental, adding and replacing drives is also possible on bcachefs. https://bcachefs.org/bcachefs-principles-of-operation.pdf . This is what I am currently using… but it is not for the faint of heart or for those who don’t have good backups!

Got it, thanks for all the information. Would be awesome if ZimaOS could add this in the future but was able to figure out how to point the Plex container to multiple media libraries. So, when I fill my current RAID 1 I will just have to add some drives and make another.

Appreciate the replies!
