I purchased a ZimaCube personal cloud believing it was suitable for people who are not very technically minded providing an easy cloud solution. Sadly this is not the case and I am really struggling. I installed some HDD’s okay but cannot access them outside of the webpage. I cannot use my Mac finder to connect and access files as it doesn’t recognize my password. I cannot update the Cube to a newer version as I get the message “Update failure. failed mounting bundle, etc” which seems common but I cannot understand the Github solution. I have not had any response from Zima support so I’m really stuck. Short of returning the Cube and suffering a significant financial loss I don’t know what to do. Is there any help for an idiot here ?
Roger, welcome. And don’t worry, you are not an idiot. The ZimaCube can feel overwhelming at first, especially with the current firmware state, but everything you are seeing is fixable.
- Finder login issue
I suggest checking two things first:
• Make sure you are using your ZimaOS account password, not your IceWhale website password.
• On macOS, try Finder > Go > Connect to Server > smb://zimacube.local or the Cube IP like smb://192.168.1.x.
I believe it will accept the login once the correct SMB credentials are used.
Separate note about macOS
Apple systems are very locked down. They hide network shares, enforce strict authentication rules, and often require exact SMB formatting before they even show the device. This is a common frustration for new users and has nothing to do with your ZimaCube.
I avoid Apple for this reason because simple visibility becomes a multi-step process with extra checks.
-
Drives only visible in the webpage
Your drives are fine. Finder simply has not authenticated yet. Once SMB accepts your login, the storage will appear like normal. -
Update failure (failed mounting bundle)
This is a known updater issue. Nothing is wrong with your Cube or your disks. I can guide you through the simple fix step by step in plain English. -
Support delay
Support can be slow at times, but the community can help you faster. You do not need to return the Cube.
If you share two things
• the ZimaCube software version from Settings > About
• the exact Finder error
I will guide you through everything clearly and simply until your setup works the way it should.
You are not alone. We will get your Cube sorted.
Thank you for the encouragement, most appreciated.
I seem to have a very limited functionality on my Cube. There is no About in my settings menu. Under General I can see ZimaOS v1.2.0. Looking at examples of the settings page online they appear very different to what I can see I.e no Members or options to set RAID etc.
When trying to access the Cube in finder I get the dialogue box asking for login as registered user and on inputting my credentials it just shakes as something is wrong. If I try guest it will show any files I have marked as shared on the cube. I can ssh from the cube to my Mac but not the other way around.
Any guidance most gratefully accepted, thank you ![]()
Roger, thank you for the update. Everything you describe actually makes sense for ZimaOS v1.2.0, so you are not doing anything wrong.
1. Your Settings page looks different because you are on an early version
ZimaOS v1.2.0 is very limited.
This version does not show
• About
• Members
• RAID setup
• Many storage features
So the limited menu is normal. The newer screenshots online are from versions 1.5 and above. Your Cube simply has an older system.
2. Finder login shaking means the username and password do not match the SMB service
This is very common on macOS.
Please try these exact steps
Open Finder
Press Command plus K
Enter
smb://zimacube.local
or
smb://192.168.1.x (replace with your Cube IP)
When the login box appears
Username: the same name you use to sign in to the ZimaCube web page
Password: the same password you use on the ZimaCube web page
If it shakes, it means the SMB service is not matching the password. We can fix this once we update your system.
3. SSH working from Cube to Mac but not the other way around is normal
This simply means your Mac has SSH blocked by default. This does not affect your storage or file access.
4. The main issue is the outdated system
Your Cube cannot update because of the bundle mounting error. Once we help you update to the newer version, the menus will appear, Finder login will work, and you will have full storage features.
If you can tell me the exact update error message you see, I will guide you with very simple steps to fix it. We will get your Cube updated and fully working.
Hello, please upgrade your ZimaOS version first.
Note that you need to upgrade to version 1.2.5 first, and then upgrade to the latest version 1.5.3.
For upgrade instructions, please refer to: Update offline | Zimaspace Docs
George,
Great stuff, I so appreciate your help
.I have screwed something up because following your steps I still have issues with credentials so I must have done something odd so let’s start with sorting the update as you suggest.
SSH from my Mac works to and from other devices on my network so again I have messed up a password or have encryption key issues which I always struggle with
. Anyway the error message when trying to update is :
“Update failure. Failed mounting bundle. Failed to load dm table: Invalid argument”
Roger, perfect. And thank you for the exact error message. Dina from IceWhale is correct. Your Cube must go in this order
1.2.0 to 1.2.5
then
1.2.5 to 1.5.3
Your current error
Update failure. Failed mounting bundle. Failed to load dm table: Invalid argument
usually means the update file did not mount properly in 1.2.0. It is very common for this version.
Here is the simple path forward.
Step 1: Download the correct 1.2.5 update file
Use Dina’s link
Update offline | Zimaspace Docs
Download only the update for 1.2.5.
Do not download 1.5.3 yet.
Step 2: Upload the 1.2.5 bundle in your ZimaCube web page
Settings
Update
Select Update Offline
Choose the 1.2.5 file you downloaded
Start the update
This update is small and usually succeeds even if Finder login is not working yet.
Step 3: Let the Cube reboot and finish
After the reboot, go back to Settings and confirm the version now shows 1.2.5.
The menu will still look simple. That is normal.
Step 4: Only after 1.2.5, download the 1.5.3 update
Then update again using the same Update Offline method.
Once you reach 1.5.3
• the Settings page will show the full menu
• SMB login becomes stable
• Finder access becomes much easier
• RAID and Members will appear
• all new features unlock
After you update to 1.2.5, tell me and I will guide you step by step through the 1.5.3 update and fix your Finder password issue very easily.
George It looks like I have fallen at the first hurdle. I have downloaded the file zimaos_zimacube-1.2.5.raucb and placed it in the offline folder under rauc but I cannot find an update menu. On the main web page there is a settings menu on the upper LHS but there are no update options there just Network, Storage and General none of which have update options. Sorry if this is dumb but I don’t know where to go now. In the Rauc/offline folder the only option there is to download which places a duplicate in the Mac download folder. Would really appreciate your guidance.
George, cancel the last plea, I have now upgraded to 1.2.5 via the ZimaCube CLI with a little help from AI
. Phew !!
And SSH/SMB enabled so I can access the drivers from my Mac, progress mate !!!
