New RAID1 setup does a resync - is this normal?

Hello,

I have a brandnew ZimaBoard2 (updated to ZimaOS 1.5.4) with 2 brandnew HDDs. Just set up a RAID1, following whatever defaults are given by ZimaOS.

But now I’ve a question: ZimaOS dashboard reports the RAID1 is resyncing. Why? Is this a normal behaviour for a freshly set up RAID1? Note also, by now I also haven’t copied a single bit of my data yet to the RAID.

Thanks for clarification.

Yes my new RAID1 also did this.

PS I’d get some airflow over those drives.

Thanks. So while you observed a resync as well, you definitely consider that a normal / to be expected operation?

Regarding HDD temperatures: they are currently mounted in the standard tray from Zima. Yes, I’ve got the idea also for an extra fan  But need first clarification - see here my question related to that: what is the specified maximum current on the fan header?

If the two hard drives are brand new, or have just been put into ZimaOS to form a RAID 1 array, the system needs to perform an initial synchronization.

Reason: RAID 1 works by mirroring, so the two disks must be exactly the same.

Process: Although both disks are empty, the system needs to “write” the data from beginning to end to ensure that every sector of the hard drive is aligned and to establish a verification mechanism. This way, when writing data in the future, the system will know where to write it.

Thank you very much! This is the confirmation I was looking for and I’m relieved that this is normal operation.

It’s actually my second ZimaBoard2 unit I’m setting up, but the first one I deployed has 2x 3TB HDDs, and all was very new to me, so I didn’t realize a resync back then. Obviously a 3TB RAID1 also takes much less time and probably was already finished before I was able to notice a resync operation
