Can someone please point me in the right direction with getting a macOS virtual machine running?
I tried a couple months ago and just couldn’t figure it out. I believe there are certain boot setting that have to be applied.

I still need to figure out how to use macOS systems in ZVM…
Also, Vista is having install troubles in ZVM. The mouse+keyboard capture doesn’t work; I can’t click anything.
It would also be helpful if ZimaOS > VM files were named after their ZVM name, or placed in a folder with the ZVM name. The only differentiator is the GB size.
Takes two minutes and it’s a normal install. You’ll need some good hardware though.
Using named VM:s can’t you just create a folder and use it?
Apple do not allow the issue of MacOS on any thing other that Apple devices.
Given IceWhale do not make Apple hardware this is going to be breaking Apples T&C and would fall into the illegal category.
Apple are known to have prosecuted companies who sell “hackintosh” hardware, while its not quite the same here lets not put this forum at risk by discussing it further.
No problem installing it as a virtuell machine in kvm/qemu, but on this rig GitHub - dockur/macos: macOS inside a Docker container. works. Ive tested it for fun
It might possible but Apple’s T&C don’t allow you to do so.
Sure. It was about Zima getting heat from Apple because the platform allows it. Anyway, it’s possible, I just gave a tip about how to. Nough said about it.
Thanks for the Docker container, I was not aware of it. Ironically it looks like it may not go back far enough. I think it’s 10.8 or 10.10 that I need. I’ll explore further.
I understand why Zima isn’t openly commenting or enabling it. But beyond that I don’t care about T&C. I’ve used macOS in virtual apps like Parallels and Virtual Machine. There’s one old app I need to find a way to run, and it’s difficult now that I have only Apple Silicon Macs. It’s not like Apple is providing me a way to run 10.8 on an M3.
Using named VM:s can’t you just create a folder and use it?
I do have all of my OS install files organized nicely. But Zima’s ZVM files (located in ZimaOS > VM) are not named at all. They’re random filenames. Only the GB size corresponds to the actual VM installation.
You’ll probably need a more complete manager for getting it done I believe. Or, who knows, quemu in a box ? GitHub - qemus/qemu: QEMU in a Docker container.
Btw. https://mac.getutm.app/ (and latest preview of parallels desktop) can do x86 emulation on arm mac’s. It’s slow (there is a snail icon for it) but it works. It will probably help you. I’m running x86 Ubuntu on a M4 Mac.
GitHub - qemus/qemu: QEMU in a Docker container. for sure is the fastest way of installing ZimaOS, I imagine an old MacOS would wotk also?
Can confirm, UTM is a great VM for Apple Silicon Macs!
I forgot all about UTM! Tested it one time on an iPad for fun then never looked further into it.
Yes, UTM will solve my problem. I guess my vision was to have all virtual machines running inside ZVM, but at least I can store them all on my main storage now instead of using up valuable space on the ZimaOS SSD.
I’m currently running into an error of “internal error connecting to SPICE” but once I figure that out I’ll be able to get it set up.
Give the Docker a try. Save the files in your VM library. I don’t remember those old mac’s media but I believe there was some iso floating around. I had a couple of pc with macOS and my MacBook pro had Linux for a while so everything is possible.
The Docker seemed complicated but I’ll take a look at it again.
I do have ISOs from most of the OSs I once owned with various computers. But http://macintoshgarden.org can also be used.
I’ve tried an iso from Internet Archive, it didn’t work so your best way forward is probably your Mac. The GitHub Project with ready to install virtual mac’s , you can always ask for your version.
OT: Why will this thread be closed in 24h?
Is there an auto-close after 6 months set to Discourse?
I set it as I mentioned before Apple do not allow the use of MacOS on anything other than Apple hardware.
I set it at 2 days so this thread could finish then it will close, IceWhale should not be seen encouraging anyone to break Apples copyright/intellectual property. Apple may not go after individual’s but they do try and prosecute companies who they feel are encouraging users to put MacOS on non Apple hardware.
OK, makes sense!
No problem. Just close it down. It’s not IceWhale that makes virtualization possible in Linux but better safe than sorry.
