Help Installing on minipc (intel nuc 10)

Hello, I’ve followed all the instructions on installing ZimaOS via balena etcher on my flash drive. Once I enter the boot menu on my computer it tells me “installing ZimaOS” and then I get this following issue where the install just stops:

Saving 256 bits of creditable seed for next boot

Starting syslogd: OK

Starting acpid: OK

Starting klogd: OK

Running sysctl: OK

Populating /deu using ude: done

Starting network: OK

Starting crond: OK

Yeah I’ve seen this a few times on NUCs like the Intel NUC 10, it looks like it’s stuck there, but it’s usually not a real crash.

Most of the time it’s one of these:

  • USB stick causing issues
  • BIOS settings (especially Secure Boot / UEFI)
  • or the display just hanging during boot

I’d start simple:
try a different USB stick + reflash the ISO, and make sure Secure Boot is off and you’re booting UEFI.

Also worth leaving it a couple minutes, sometimes it’s still going in the background.

If it still stops there, we can narrow it down properly.

Thank you!

-I’ve tried using a different usb stick and different usb ports on the nuc.

-I tried using hdmi and usbc output and different monitors

-I originally had secure boot turned on and it wouldn’t even let be start the install. I then turned it off and I was able to at least start the ZimaOS installer.

any other ideas?

Hi @oshazly12-cmd

Do you happen to know if “Intel Turbo Boost Technology” is enabled in BIOS (Performance → Processor)?

I’ve read that disabling this may help?

Also, try using a USB 2.0 drive instead of USB 3.0 drive for installation (if you’re using USB3.0 drive).

I turned that off as well.

I tried all usb ports on the NUC and I tried an old usb drive, brand new usb drive, and usbc drive.

I also made sure it was on AHCI not RAID.

I know it says to use balena etcher but should I try Rufus?

I’ve used both successfully for installing Zima OS. I have a NUC 8 and had no problems installing Zima OS on that.
I’m sorry I couldn’t have been more helpful, but gelbuilding truly knows this stuff and is usually around here at night in the US, and has already mentioned that he’s seen this issue before. He’s helped me more than once and I appreciate his help here in the community.

I would also recommend installing version 1.5.4 too, as it seems to be the last stable version, IMHO.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Yeah I’d go with what Burndaddy suggested, try ZimaOS 1.5.4.

You’ve already ruled out USB, BIOS, ports, all the usual stuff, so this really points to a compatibility issue with the newer 1.6.x builds on the Intel NUC 10.

If 1.5.4 installs normally, that pretty much confirms it straight away.

it worked! (Sort of) now I have a new issue where it finishes the install and tries to connect to the network to give it an IP address. Install stops there.

It was on WiFi so I’ll grab a long Ethernet cord tomorrow and reinstall it that connected directly to the router. Will update you then.

You lucky son of a gun! Lol I really appreciate you even responding it means a lot. I will definitely try and go with 1.5.4 and see if that will do it. I’ll also try Rufus as well.

where can I find that version btw? Can’t find it anywhere, it’s probably right under my nose

I had the same problem when trying to install to a GMKtec Nucbox K8+. I was able to get 1.6.1 to install and run by using its ISO instead of its IMG.

Thank you for your help! It’s alive!!! Set the IP address to static and will let this thing run until I have other issues. Thank you again for your help, it’s very appreciated.

Love to see it, nice one

That lines up perfectly with what we suspected. Between using the ISO and getting past that boot hang, it just confirms it was a compatibility quirk on the Intel NUC 10, not anything you were doing wrong.

Setting a static IP is a good move too, makes everything easier going forward.

Let it run and settle in now. If anything pops up later, you’ve at least got a solid base to work from.

Configure your IP address through your router and leave it static so it never changes.
