Hello ZimaOS team,
First, thank you for your continuous work on ZimaOS — it is a very user-friendly and efficient NAS system.
I would like to suggest a feature that could greatly improve data recovery and user experience: a simplified RAID recovery workflow when the operating system disk fails.
Current Situation:
When the system drive is lost or ZimaOS needs to be reinstalled, users with existing RAID arrays (for example RAID5 created with mdadm) often have to manually assemble the array using terminal commands. This process can be difficult for non-advanced users and increases the risk of mistakes.
Suggested Improvement:
Add a one-click or guided recovery option in the interface that:
Automatically detects existing mdadm RAID arrays.
Allows users to re-import or mount the array without rebuilding or copying data.
Similar to how OpenMediaVault can detect and reassemble existing arrays easily.
Benefits:
Faster recovery after OS failure.
Reduced risk of accidental data loss.
More beginner-friendly experience.
Stronger confidence for users storing important data on ZimaOS.
Possible Implementation Ideas:
A “Recover Existing RAID” button in the Storage section.
Automatic scanning for mdadm superblocks during first boot.
Read-only mounting option for safe verification before enabling writes.
I believe this feature would significantly improve resilience and usability, especially for home NAS users who may not be comfortable using command-line recovery steps.
Thank you for considering this request and for building such a great platform!
Best regards,
