None of the ports work.
Tried 2 different cables on 4 different ports of on my motherboard.
NONE OF THE ETHERNET PORTS LIGHT UP.

That’s right. You don’t get ANY ethernet connection if the backplane or a hdd cage is NOT inserted.

What system are you currently using?
You mean operating system? How that matters for physical connection of the Ethernet NIC?
I have situation where ZimaCube connected to my Lenovo Docking station has Ethernet link at 1Gbps, but connected to my Gigabit switch, it doesn’t. The switch is fine as my old self-made NAS based on Gigabyte motherboard works with it. I wanted to connect both NASes together and with my docking station and I can’t. To me firmware of ZimaCube’s NICs is faulty and negotiation fails.
