any idea if disk encryption is coming to zimaos?
We happened to talk about it recently. Would you give us more info about why you need this? And what would you like the function be like in ZimaOS?
In the general settings, under security, there should be the option to encrypt the disk by providing a password to access the data.
For privacy reasons, it would also be nice to be able to enter a dummy password that allows the user to log in to an empty session (partition within a partition).
This way, if forced to provide access by a third party, they can enter this “dummy” code and nothing from their personal partition will be visible.
Would you please describe it in more detail? Like, in what situation? And how will it be presented? A story may be better.
so lets say I have 4 hard drives 2 in raid for computer backup and another 2 in raid for lets say movies stream with plex or jellyfin.
so if somebody raids my home they can install the drives somewhere else and take all my info from my pc backup. and also the plex which the movies would not matter much but I would like to encrypt the disk that has the PC backup since my main pc has LUKS encryption so if they steal my laptop all good. but if they steal my NAS then im screw.
Thanks for your story. Copy that.
Let’s say I’m kidnapped at home with my NAS.
I’m taken to a location by the kidnapper, he turns the NAS back on, and the disk is encrypted.
If I don’t decrypt it, the worst things will happen to me, even death, and my disk, with all my data, could be physically destroyed by the criminal.
We can avoid this by entering a “Password B” that allows access to a (limited) disk partition containing only non-sensitive data, such as pictures of kittens, books on the Austrian School of Economics, and a scan of my driver’s license.
No data would be compromised; I would have provided the password following the same procedure used today for NAS with encrypted disks.
Let’s say I’m just robbed and the robbers find my NAS turned on and ask me for my user’s access password (so I can’t change the user to a user with limited access because they would see it), it would be interesting to include this “Password B” which always allows access to the same portion of the disk as in the previous example to have the same effect.
Copy that, as well. We will talk about this feature. By the way, are you two guys the same person? Lol, just joking.
hahahaha no, but have similar ideas hehe
I saw that i can do this on the CLI?
also i install unraid today to test something and they have ZFS encryption options. so maybe is not to hard to implement to zimaos?
We talked about it early this morning. It should be implemented in the future. Thanks for your suggestion.
