I’m currently running ZimaOS on a system with the following specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 PRO (12 cores, 24 threads @ 2.00 GHz)
RAM: 48 GB DDR5 @ 5600 MHz
GPU: AMD Radeon 890M (integrated)
Device ID: AMD/ATI Device 150e (rev d1)
I would love to see GPU hardware acceleration support for AMD integrated graphics in ZimaOS. This would enable several powerful use cases:
Potential Use Cases:
Hardware-accelerated transcoding for Plex/Jellyfin (significantly faster media streaming)
Local AI/ML workloads (Ollama, Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI)
Hardware encoding/decoding for Immich photo processing
GPU passthrough to Docker containers for compute-intensive applications
Video processing and rendering tasks
Current Situation: Right now, the Radeon 890M appears to be idle/unused in ZimaOS, which means CPU-only processing for all tasks. This results in slower transcoding, higher power consumption, and inability to run GPU-accelerated AI models locally.
Technical Requirements:
ROCm support for AMD GPUs
GPU passthrough to Docker containers (--device /dev/dri)
Mesa/VAAPI drivers for hardware video encoding/decoding
Documentation for configuring GPU acceleration in common applications
Similar Implementations: Other NAS/server operating systems like Unraid, TrueNAS Scale, and Proxmox already support AMD GPU passthrough successfully.
This feature would make ZimaOS much more powerful for users with AMD APUs, especially the newer Ryzen AI series with strong integrated graphics.
Is this on the roadmap? Would love to hear the team’s thoughts on this!
+1 to this, I have the exact same issues with 610M and 780M iGPU’s, even though they show up as available they’re not really being used due to missing drivers or hardware acceleration software. ROCm support would be a must have here.
Thanks for posting it. I have an AMD GPU that arrived today (a pretty old one, I must to say), and it didn’t work because there is no ROCm installed, so no /dev/kfd device to pass to the Ollama container.
EDIT: you could create a zpackage with ROCm, like the kernel drivers, rocm-smi, rocminfo, etc.
Please, release ROCm 7.0 and also 6.2. My GPU is a AMD Instinct MI50 from 2018, so it’s just supported, even now it is in deprecated status, by version 6.2.
Likewise I’m running a AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX With Integrated AMD Radeon 680M Also have 32gb ram boot is 1TB SSD, plus another 2TB SATA, plan to add tomorrow another 2TB NVME drive (can support 2) I’ll have by USB3 or maybe USB4 C slot 2 16TB HDD currently on my OMV NAS as BTRFS Raid 1, would be nice if ZimaOS could use it without reformatting it. But either way I’ll have that. Probably going to shut down my Synology DS218+ that has 2 8TB HDD in them, and also hook them up to ZimaOS. I also might just sell the 218+ with the 2 drives in it. Both the 8TB and my 16TB drives are enterprise class drives.
Not that the integrated GPU is GREAT, it would be better to use it than not to use it.
Hi everyone, thanks for your feedback! After discussion, we have limited support and are not going to be working on more support/test for AMD integrated graphics in the short term. We’re a small team, and we have to balance the priorities of implementing various features. Perhaps we’ll improve support for integrated graphics in the future. Thanks again for your feedback.
Hello guys,
I have to clarify. At present, ZimaOS already supports most AMD integrated graphics cards at the kernel level, since we don’t have enough AMD devices to test, but I tested only the AMD 5800H, which can fully use the GPU when transcoding with jellyfin. For ROCM, there really isn’t enough energy to support it at the moment.
