Zimaphoto First use

Hello,
I’m reposting this; I don’t think I posted it in the right category yesterday.
I translate from French to English using Google Translate.
I installed the ZimaOS beta on my system specifically for Zima Photos.
I appreciated the option during installation to choose which hard drive would store the photos.
In my case, I had simply copied my photos onto the hard drive in a bunch of folders named after the event date or type (birthday, family meal, etc.).
For now, I’m letting the machine index everything.
One thing I’m missing is a small indicator showing whether or not an action is currently being performed in Zima Photos; I noticed that the photo date doesn’t always match the EXIF data—it often reflects the file copy date instead, which is annoying.
I tested a video shot on my Xiaomi 15; I can hear the audio, but there’s no picture. I haven’t checked other videos yet.
It would be great to be able to specify a preferred viewer on the PC—in my case, FastStone Image Viewer.
I’d also like the ability to neatly reorganize my folders into a single master photo directory; will Zima Photos allow for that?
Identifying duplicates would also be useful, along with the ability to compare them to weed out false positives.
Indeed, I have several years’ worth of data listed under 2026. Thumbnail display is slow. Will Zima Photos generate thumbnails like Immich does?
The program doesn’t allow you to delete a photo either; I would like to be able to change the date and name, and fix red-eye.
After an hour, I found the indexing process stuck at 100 images; the program says “Running,” but I don’t see any movement. It’s still showing 100 images out of 31,000.
The system consists of an Intel G4560, 16GB of DDR4-2400 RAM, a Crucial BX500 SSD, and two 2TB Seagate Barracuda Green hard drives. I don’t have a graphics card with 6GB of RAM, though I could install a GTX 1030 2GB GDDR5—but I don’t think that would help.
Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for the detailed feedback and for testing Zima Photos Beta.

We have confirmed a progress-reporting issue in ZimaOS v1.8.0-beta1. During indexing, intermediate progress is not displayed correctly. The indicator may remain at 0 / N, 100 / N, or continue showing “Running” even though indexing is still taking place in the background. It currently changes to “Completed” only after the entire indexing process has finished.

We are improving this interface so that each indexing task, its status, and its actual progress can be displayed more clearly. The progress-reporting issue is planned to be fixed in ZimaOS v1.8.0-beta2, which is expected to be released soon.

We are also working on the issue where the displayed photo date does not match the EXIF capture date. Could you please confirm whether the affected photos and videos were uploaded using the Backup feature or added directly from an existing folder? If possible, please also provide an example showing the EXIF capture date and the date displayed in Zima Photos.

Regarding the slow thumbnail loading, we cannot yet determine whether this is part of the initial processing or a separate issue. With approximately 31,000 files stored on mechanical hard drives, the initial indexing and thumbnail generation may take some time, particularly on an Intel G4560. Could you please let us know:

  • Whether thumbnail loading is still slow after indexing has run for a longer period

  • Whether previously viewed thumbnails load faster when opened again

  • Which browser and device you use to access Zima Photos

For the Xiaomi 15 video that plays audio but shows no picture, we need more information before we can confirm the cause. Could you please tell us:

  • Whether other videos recorded with the Xiaomi 15 have the same issue

  • The file format, video codec, resolution, and HDR mode, if available

  • Which browser and operating system you are using

A MediaInfo report or a short, non-private sample video would also be helpful for testing.

A discrete GPU is not required for basic indexing, object detection, or OCR. The 6 GB VRAM requirement applies only to the optional Deep Visual Understanding feature. A GT 1030 with 2 GB of VRAM would not meet this requirement, so installing it specifically for this feature would not help.

Thank you again for your feedback and for helping us improve Zima Photos.

I have that issue with Mp4 Mkv videos hear the sound on the Mp4 but no video the mkv seem to load but dont play.

This is nothing new had it with the previous Zimaos versions.

I go into Zima files and click on them to run and it brings up a player.

Please update to the latest version; we have already fixed this issue.
