I would strongly like to ask the ZimaOS team to consider releasing a ZimaOS 1.6.3 maintenance update.
To be honest, my experience with ZimaOS 1.7.0 has been extremely frustrating. I have now tested 1.7.0 several times and had to roll back to 1.6.2 because of repeated regressions and stability problems.
For me, 1.7.0 is currently not reliable enough for a production NAS.
Here are some of the regressions I have experienced:
- CPU power consumption (Watts) disappeared again on my AMD Ryzen system. This was already working correctly in 1.6.2.
- Internet/Web Links disappeared after the update.
- Icons of installed Docker applications disappeared from the interface.
- NextExplorer disappeared from the interface even though it was still installed.
- My custom Internet Links also disappeared, including links to Instagram and shopping websites.
- Some previously existing dashboard information and shortcuts were no longer preserved correctly after the update.
- The Files app has also had several regressions, including the issue where empty source folders remain after moving folders to another drive.
- The text cursor in Dark Mode is extremely difficult to see when renaming or creating files and folders.
I also tested 1.7.1-beta1. Unfortunately, I do not feel comfortable using it as a solution either. I already had problems during the rollback process, where the rollback became stuck at around 42%, and I had to work my way through the recovery process to finally get back to 1.6.2.
At this point, I really do not want more new features. I want a stable maintenance release.
My suggestion would be to release something like ZimaOS 1.6.3 that focuses specifically on stability and regression fixes rather than introducing more changes.
For example:
- Fix the empty source folder issue when moving folders.
- Fix the Dark Mode cursor visibility.
- Restore reliable CPU power (Watt) monitoring on AMD systems.
- Make sure Internet Links and dashboard shortcuts survive an upgrade.
- Make sure installed Docker applications and their icons remain correctly registered after an upgrade.
- Make sure installed applications such as NextExplorer remain visible and accessible after an upgrade.
- Generally improve the reliability of the upgrade process and make sure existing user configuration is preserved.
I understand that ZimaOS 1.7.x introduces a redesigned App Store and many new features. I also appreciate the work that has gone into the redesign.
However, for a NAS operating system, stability and preservation of existing configuration are more important to me than new features.
I would much rather stay on a stable 1.6.x branch with a 1.6.3 maintenance release than repeatedly upgrade to a newer version and discover that existing functionality, links, icons, monitoring information, or applications have disappeared.
Please consider providing a stable maintenance release focused on fixing these regressions before continuing to add more features to the 1.7.x branch.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously, because I really like ZimaOS itself. I simply need the operating system to be reliable enough that I can update it without worrying about what might disappear afterwards.

First of all, thank you again for taking the time to test the 1.7.x releases so thoroughly and for documenting the issues in such detail.
We have always believed that system stability is the foundation of everything we do. In fact, the main focus of 1.7.1 is bug fixes and stability improvements, with no new features being introduced at this stage.

My colleague Dina has been following up on this issue with you. Based on our investigation so far, it does not appear to have been caused directly by the 1.7.0 update, and it seems the issue has not occurred again since then. We will continue to keep an eye on it:

Currently, this mainly affects Docker containers installed manually through the command line, which are not automatically displayed in the ZimaOS WebUI. For now, you can add a Web link in the WebUI as an entry point. Our product team is also rethinking how externally installed applications should be recognized and managed by ZimaOS in the future. -
Upgrade reliability and preservation of existing user configurations
This has always been one of our long-term goals, and we will continue improving it. For a NAS operating system, we fully agree that upgrades should preserve existing configurations, shortcuts, and workflows without disrupting how the system was being used.
We completely understand why you would prefer a release focused on stability and fixes. That is exactly the direction of 1.7.1: prioritizing issues that affect everyday reliability rather than simply adding more features.

I feel your pain. I’m still on 1.5.4 because there hasn’t been a release since that doesn’t break things for a lot of users. Had a bunch of new equipment (New mobo, CPU, RAM, GPU, HDD’s) that I purchased and had been waiting for a stable ZimaOS release before building new setup. I got tired of waiting and have completed the new build using Unraid instead, and couldn’t be happier. I AM still running ZimaOS on an Intel NUC that only runs a few dockers (arguably the only thing Zima is good at, atm) but as I become more familiar with Unraid those will eventually transfer too. I appreciate all of the hard work on ZImaOS at Icewhale and here in the community, but one can only bang their head against a wall for so long. I don’t even bother using my Zima Plus license anymore because it disappears if I sneeze too hard.

Relatively new to the whole ZimaOS thing but now I’m relegated to keeping my system running to 1.6.1.
Every update I try so far forces me to into a never ending loop of supplying a new username and password and even when I do get into the machine all of the previous configs have disappeared losing the app drives asking for formats even though they worked previously.
I’m just thankful I managed to rollback to 1.6.1 without to much hassle but this is definitely turning me off running a home server on the Zima software in future.
I’m very sorry for the poor experience this has caused you. I suspect that the data partition was not mount properly during the upgrade and startup. Could you please assist me with updating and testing when it is convenient for you? The update will not cause any data loss.

Hi Piterdan.
I already rolled back by the time I got the second reply. Sorry fella. On that note though I’m choosing the stability of 1.6.1 and it working with the families Audiobookshelf, Jellyfin streaming and Komga libraries working rather than trying to figure out why it hasn’t done a ‘clean’ upgrade and retained configuration information.
I’ll check back now and then but I’m not about to give myself headaches over it. Happy life and all that
