HDD encryption feature in Zima OS for internal and external hard drives

Hello, will Zima OS have a feature in the future to encrypt both internal hard drives and external HDDs? I believe this feature is very important for data security to prevent illegal access. If we use an external hard disk via USB, I hope Zima OS can read encrypted HDDs, for example, LUKS encrypted, because I always encrypt my external HDD. When I tried using Zima OS, unfortunately, it couldn’t access it. I have tried using the CLI but still couldn’t, which I think is very unfortunate. All Linux should be able to access LUKS since Zima OS is based on Linux. Or if possible, it would be great to add a feature to install encryption applications like Dislocker or VeraCrypt. I hope this suggestion can be accepted for the development of Zima OS. Honestly, this is my first time trying Zima OS and I am very impressed with Zima OS and its development. Previously, I used Synology DSM. Thank you very much. …

Thank you for your detailed feedback. I have a few more questions about the encryption feature. We understand that a system can implement a variety of features, but we must prioritize and choose accordingly. Could you share how you use this feature? How does it fit into your workflow? What insights and real-world needs motivated you to prioritize this feature?

Also, could you share your first impressions of ZimaOS and your expectations for it? Thanks again.

I want to use this feature first for data security, if our device is stolen by someone else, or to prevent unauthorized access, for example the hard drive is opened through another device. Second, I really want the encryption to also be able to be used for external hard drives, because I use Zima OS on a mini PC, so it is limited to using the internal SATA port. In addition, most people, including me, always use encryption on external HDDs, because the data on the HDD is very confidential, such as work data, projects, etc., when I want to back up the HDD to Zima OS. Zima OS must be able to read the data inside. I usually use BitLocker, Luks, or Veracrypt on HDDs. So when we want to back up data from NAS to HDD, the data is also safe because the external hard drive is also encrypted. I hope Zima OS can add the feature to encrypt internal hard drives and create a feature so that Zima OS can open external HDD data encrypted with Bitlocker, Luks, or Veracrypt, or maybe Zima OS provides access to install additional applications via CLI to install Dislocker, Luks, or Veracrypt via CLI. In my opinion, if access to install these applications is provided, my problem of accessing external hard drives can be solved. I really like Zima OS because of its appearance and ease of access. Previously, I have tried True NAS, Open Media Vault, Unraid, Casa OS, and Synology’s DSM. But I am very interested in Zima OS. Thanks you

Thanks for the response. We will talk about your request.

Thank you

I heard that encryption was being worked on, for 1.5.3? Will that feature apply to external USB drives?

I just set up an external 4TB drive for some backups. (Had to reformat it to ExFat since HFS didn’t show up in ZimaOS but it’s working now.) Then I realized, anyone could snatch this external drive and plug it into a computer and see the contents, right?

The ZimaCube itself is relatively safe, since the RAID drives can’t be read in an HDD dock, and the RAID can’t be replicated in another physical RAID device without the original OS SSD, and even if the whole Cube was taken or spied on, no one could get in without my login info.

But the external drives themselves appear to be extremely vulnerable. Some of what I’m backing up I would not want anyone to see. So in terms of security, this makes using external drives very risky without the ability to encrypt them.

In fact, reformatting the drive to ExFat from HFS was a little inconvenient, because I had to unplug it from the Cube, plug it into my Mac, and then determine what to reformat it as. So a nice feature overall would be the ability to reformat external drives + encrypt them from inside ZimaOS.

I’d also like to see the option to use Bitlocker Encrypted Harddrives within zima. On my main distro Ubuntu I can easily plug in a bitlocker drive via usb, enter the password and use it.
